| DEADLY MRSA Did you know? MRSA can be transmitted from humans to dogs, according to Patrick McDonough, PhD, assistant professor at Cornell Univerity's veterinary college. First symptoms look like a boil, red pimple, insect or spider bite. The swelling then proceeds into an abscess which causes pain, fever, swelling, and pus. '08) written by Dr. Jean Dodds, MRSA is resistant to all penicillins and cephalosporins. The article also states that, "Dogs can become colonized with MRSA from infected humans, and can transmit it to other dogs and people." MRSA is often cultured from canine wounds because the infection came from a human. This is not usually a problem for people with healthy immune systems, but it is with the very young, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. One important method of prevention is routinely washing with antiseptic soap after contact with an infected person or dog. |
